A job

Well, I decided to apply for a job this week. My parents have been enjoying dance lessons at a local Arthur Murry Dance Studio this year and so I took some lessons too. Well, last Saturday I was at one of the work shops when I found out the studio was hiring. So, I immediately asked for an application. It seems like a pretty sweet job.

  • I'd be working with people non-stop
  • They'd train me and teach me all the dances I'd need to know
  • I'd be practicing my dance moves as my job. Well, at least stay up to date with them.
  • It's within walking or bicycling distance of my house

So this all sounds like a lot of fun. The one catch is that I would have to shave my beard. I told them up front I would be willing to because I knew there was no chance otherwise.

Well, so far this week I have been to three interviews and I have another one tomorrow morning. But I was told tonight that if I am going to be offered the job it would be at the Vancouver, WA studio. Which was a major bummer. I don't know the people at the Vancouver studio. I like the people at the studio close by. I feel comfortable around them.

So, now I have a dilemma. Do I want to work at a place that is at least 45 minutes away during rush hour? Do I want to shave my beard when I am only a month and a half from my goal? Do I even want to work at a place where image is so important? Where I would have to shave? Do I want a job where I have to constantly prove my worth (on the dance floor)? Should I do this with the full knowledge that it is going to distract me from web development? I'm not a very confident dancer, would I just feel inadequate the whole time?

Such tough questions.

honestly, i think this job is perfect for you. that's a bit of a bite that it's a bit farther than you'd like, but it's still not awful. and as for the beard, well, all things must come to an end some time. it seems you've been debating whether or not to part with it sooner than you'd planned, so i don't think losing it would be all that bad.

regardless of what you choose, i think the option is exciting as hell. or at least i'm excited as hell for you!

    good luck!

Is this a normal 9-5 job? I had a job in Vancouver one summer, living in Portland and working in Vancouver I ended up going the opposite direction of most of the traffic, so it didn't really make any difference if I was commuting during rush hour or not.

    Car commuting does suck though.

Actually I just looked at a map of where this place is, couldn't you ride a bike there? I thought there was a bike route over the I5 bridge now.

I think you should wait to shave your beard b/c:
1)You are so close to your goal!
2)1.5 hours of driving a day increases stress and is bad for your posture...even if you like driving.
3)Why the hell does it matter whether you have a beard or not...are people seriously going to care as long as you are a good teacher?
Did they really say you had to shave your beard to work there?

Oh...also, I just really like your beard and think you should never shave it; however, I think I may like your beard more than you do.

And...you would have to change the picture @ the top of this page.

I don't think this is pertinent (and it requires that I write your nickname, so...sorry about that), but

I am going to try it out. They have a week long trial period to see if I am a good fit.

I am currently wearing a pony tail and a tie. Wish me luck!

I will wish you good luck, so "Good luck!" But I don't think you should work there if they make you sign a contract.
