Barefoot running is the best!
So, a little while ago my future brother in law started going on and on about barefoot running. He is a cross country and track coach (and recently ran 100 miles in one week) so when he has thoughts on running you listen to them. Well, when I was in Boulder visiting my fiance before my road trip I decided to give it a try.
I was on a run with my fiance and I sort of had a nagging pain in my leg in the usual spot for the whole 35 minute run. It didn't really hurt but I could just feel that something down there was a little off. It is sort of mentally painful more than physically painful because every second I am wondering if it is getting worse, or if it is getting better, or if this run is going to set my rehab back by weeks, or if I need to be pushing even harder to help strengthen weak muscles or if I am running wrong, should I be more on my toes or concentrating on the heel-toe motion, or if my running shoes are helping AND SO ON. Anyway, after the run I decided to run for 5 to 10 minutes in the grass. I took off my shoes and socks and stowed them in a bush and took off. And I kid you not, the second, the second I started running barefoot my pain disappeared.
Since then I have ran a few more times, always running half in sneakers and half barefooted. I even worked my way up to a 53 minute run earlier this week.
Now, I wouldn't say I am a barefoot running convert because I have always liked running barefoot, specifically while playing ultimate frisbee or soccer. But I'm certainly now a barefoot running advocate! Everyone should do it!
I even convinced my neighbors Kate and Satchel to give it a try with me when we went on a run a couple days ago. They both didn't like it, but afterwards Kate did say that while running her knee is always a little sore but it didn't hurt while we were barefoot and in the grass!
See! I'm telling you people!
Now, some barefoot runners will run anywhere barefoot. I am not one of those people, I think you'd have to be crazy to run barefoot on concrete or anywhere with a hard surface. So, I strictly recommend grass!

Fascinating. I think I am going to try this because I have been having problems with running since last October.

Is there a place in Portland that you go to run on the grass? I mentioned this to Sebastian and he didn't want to just run in circles in the yard...

I just go to Grant (High School) (hey, that's where I went to high school!) and run around the soccer field.
