Extreme Reading

This is a copy of an email I just mailed to over 110 people on campus that signed up to be in this club I am helping start.

Hurray! Extreme Reading has officially started!
In case it has escaped you, Extreme Reading is the most extreme reading group on campus.
There will be a meeting every week and a different book for each meeting. So, that's a book a week. The trick is that the books are chosen six weeks in advance and all meetings are optional, so if only the fourth of six books sounds interesting, you'll have at least four weeks to read it and only one meeting to show up for. Every week, a new book will be chosen for the meeting six weeks away.
Also, on the last week of every block, we will have shorter stories or poems to read because it can be such a busy time.
The reading list for the next six weeks is:
1. The Alchemist - Paulo Coelho
Discussion set for 8:00pm Monday, September 22nd
Meeting place to be announced.
2. Slaughterhouse Five - Kurt Vonnegut
Discussion set for Wednesday, October 1st
3. Jacobson's Organ - Lyall Watson
Discussion set for Wednesday, October 8th
4. The Da Vinci Code - Dan Brown
Discussion set for Wednesday, October 15th
5. Einstein's Dreams - Alan Lightman
Discussion set for Monday, October 20th
6. Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance - Robert Pirsig
Discussion set for Wednesday, October 29th
There will be lots more information about the books and the general organization of the group in the coming days. Many of the books in this first set are very contemporary, but our goal here is to read a very diverse selection of books, so we can try to have a more varied selection in later weeks. If you want to suggest any books or have any questions, send an e-mail to me.

Any way, just thought I would share with you all what I am up to. Feel free to participate. In the next couple weeks we are going to set up an online site for discussing the books.

For my humanities, we just read the canzioere which is a collection of love poems by Petrarch. It was good, partly because the woman Laura that he is so in love with didn't even know that he existed. They are kinda fun.....if you are looking for poems. Books.....well, the Da Vinci Code is really good, what about also, some women authors, I don't know, Toni Morrison, or you could read Pride and Prejudice!!!!!!

Sorry, that is all the advice I have for now...

    Hey Ben,

I checked in on your webpage again and I'm impressed with what I see. Make sure to have fun as an RA.

And now, what really caught my eye: Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance. Good choice.

Isn't it one of your goals to ride? Go out and buy a bike. Then we'll take off across the country. Hey, at least think about it.

I feel obliged to inform you that next friday is national talk like a pirate day. So start practicing. Also, i think it would be fun to dress up and make it national BE a pirate day. Oh and ben, a pirate club is in the works at grant and a few people are toying with the idea of putting together a pirate themed halloween party. Some tasty pirate tidbits from back home, have fun!
