Heros
My neighbor was taking a survey last night. She asked me to name a hero of mine, and to say why he was a hero. And I couldn't think of anyone. The best I could come up with was Abraham Lincoln. But he isn't even really a hero.
Here is a definition from dictionary.com:
a person who, in the opinion of others, has heroic qualities or has performed a heroic act and is regarded as a model or ideal.
A model or ideal. That was how I was thinking of a hero. So Abraham Lincoln really isn't a model for me. (I'm not a president you see).
But who are my heros? I have put a lot of thought into this, and this is what I have come up with. And I am not going to include the heros of mine that that read this website. So don't wonder where you are.
- Evan Horn. His was the name I finally gave Kate (my neighbor). The reason? He treated others right and was enthusiastic about life.
- Joe Rosenblum. Same reasons. In retrospect, I would probably now name him. But probably just because I didn't know him as well as I knew Evan.
- Roy Shears. A friend from high school.
I am sure there are others. But these are all the ones that come to mind, right now.
You'll notice that there is no one famous on this list. I didn't plan on not thinking of anyone famous. But you just don't know famous people. You know what the seem to be is all. Anyway...
Why are these people my heros? Because they were good people and cared about others. And their presence brightened my life.
I have always wished that my presence brightens other people's lives. That I have affected other people. Made their life better in some way.
So I guess my new years resolution is to try and do that. How I am going to go about that is a topic for another post.
And, I don't want to hear whether or not I am failing or succeeding at my goal, but I would like to here of some of your heros or new years resolutions.

i always say that neil young is my hero. in practicality, he's just the coolest guy ever. my heros are generally friends of mine or family members that i admire and respect. i hope they know who they are, though i can't promise they do. but if i ever told them, it wouldn't be the same. so, for those of you who are my heros, thanks. and those who think they are, that's cool too.

I know I am a hero to the fool. Which makes my new years resolution to double my pitying of him even more difficult.

my grandma is my hero, she always has been, she is just so awesome in every way. roy shears was pretty cool, as far as hero material I am lacking in my memory, but I do wonder what he is doing now. He would be an awesome person to catch up with.
as far as resolutions I have none, it is always easier that way because I never keep my resolutions anyways, life is too short for such restrictions like no more chocolate, and I try to be a better person on a daily basis so a resolution seems to be kind of irrelevant.

My heroes are people who are very creative and energetic, and have a "renaissance man" aura. Brian Eno leaps to mind, and kinda Susan Sontag. I used to feel that way about Cory Doctorow, but he has gotten to be a bit annoying in recent years (plus his last book sucked).
I also have librarian heroes, who fit the same personality type: trying lots of things, writing and explaining in an inspiring, engaging way.

I don't have resolutions, but I have a set intention: "authenticity and acceptance." What that means (to me) is being (and accepting) who I am, without too much worry.
My hero... Moo. She is certainly authentic!
