Marco Polo
While we're on the subject of things I love, last weekend I played marco polo in the pool at our apartment complex for what must have been close to an hour and a half!
Really, this post has been a long time coming. I initially intended to write it in 2005. I played marco polo for the first time at a graph theory conference in Florida. We ended up playing marco polo for hours on that trip. Ever since then I've been meaning to write about how much I love that game. But have never gotten around to it.
Well, let me tell you, I love marco polo! The game is super simple, one person has their eyes closed and when they say "marco" everyone has to say "polo". Then they try to tag someone. That's it.1 So simple, yet so brilliant!
Of all the silly children's games, marco polo might be the best. Either it or bloody murder2.
This is a pretty crazy claim of mine, considering I'm really not much of a water creature. But as I get older, I'm slowly starting to find out that a lot of things I didn't think I liked or wasn't any good at, are actually really fun, and I didn't like them because of insecurities on my part or people being jerk faces when I was younger. But once you get past all that baggage, man I just keep picking up new things that are amazingly awesome!
And so now I turn to you my courageous comrades, what is everyone else's favorite silly children's game? You know, red rover, red light green light, hide and seek, tag, freeze tag, etc.
1. And if anyone tries to convince you that it is in the rules that you can get out of the pool during the game, don't let them. I can't think of a more cruel way to play for the person who is it. The whole point is that they have you contained to a limited known area and you have to avoid them!
2. And no, I don't literally mean 'bloody murder'. My friends from home and I have a game we played a lot growing up called 'bloody murder'. And yes it is really awesome. And no we didn't name it.

Freeze tag AND hide and seek in the dark. Both equally amazing. And longed for...

Yeah! "Bloody Murder" is basically hide and seek in the dark!

I love hide and seek! But not in the dark, because then I get scared... I also like duck duck goose and freeze tag!

Capture the flag has to be one of the most amazing, fun, scalable games ever invented. It was equally fun playing with 50 kids on a wide open field during recess and with 6 kids at night around the creek by my house, but it was like an entirely different game with different numbers of people and different venues. Paintball guns, added in middle school, ended my capture the flag playing days.
Also, marco polo is way better if you can get out of the pool, just as long as the "it" person can "tag" the offenders by calling fishy out of water.
