My birthday/Christmas list 2008 or An Ode to Materialism

Christmas is in exactly 2 months! Woo! Which means I need to make my annual list of things that I want.

Big ticket items

  • A Motorcycle. Not a crotch-rocket. Something classic looking that isn't too big. I don't need to go over 60mph or anything. And if it has a sidecar that would be the greatest thing ever.
  • The new Apple LED Cinema Display
  • A Drobo (These things are sooo cool)
  • A Digital SLR! I am a Canon guy, so Here are the options.
  • Lights for my bicycle. I don't really know anything about these. So, some nice ones that are going to keep me safe!

Smaller-ish things

I really kind of wish my birthday was in the summer, so I could ask for summer clothes for my birthday and then winter clothes for Christmas. Oh well, the burdens we have to carry, eh?

What about you guys? What are you guys asking for this holiday season?

Update: So, I decided to do some research on some of the items in my list before leaving things up to fate (AKA my parents). I just went to the Patagonia and REI stores downtown, and oh my god! Patagonia is just the greatest place ever! I didn't try on a whole lot, but I did try on both the Patagonia items listed above (the Cashmere ¼-zip and the Synchilla—I liked the stonewash color the best) and they were both amazing! I also tried on the Lined Flannel Jacket and fell in love with that, too!

For the longest time L.L. Bean was my favorite store ever, but then I went and visited one of their retail shops and decided that their target demographic was not one I related to. But the Patagonia store had wood floors and a wonderful outdoor feel! I fell in love. Pretty much. If you are going to get me some clothes, check there first! (Don't look at the prices: They are just a shmidge expensive)

Anyway, after checking things out I have crossed some things off my list. And would like to add these things that I forgot to add:

  • A new bike helmet. Aren't you supposed to replace them every 5 years?
  • A thermometer that records high and lows for the day

You talk about motorcycles enough that you should really look into taking a basic rider training class: http://teamoregon.orst.edu/TO_Web/brt.html

Aside from it being a good idea to have someone who knows what they are doing teach you how to ride, it's also fun.

I don't understand, is it free? I can't find a single price anywhere on the website!

All right, Keri, you get the big ticket items; I'll try to convince Benjamin that his birthday is in the summer.

i want the iphone-dev team to unlock the 3g iphone so i can use this expensive (but oh-so beautiful) brick in china!

that and some good california pinot noir with my friends/family. and cheese. because it's been a long time since i've had any of that. and pierro's thin crust pineapple pizza (the corner pieces!).

and a new jacket. a nice long thin black wool one.

and maybe a mac pro with an upgrade to 8 or 16 GB of RAM and a 24" apple LED display

but really, what i want, are the first two. and the jacket i think daisy and i are going to get next week (since it's autumn here, at last). and the pizza's a given. and the mac pro will happen as soon as i figure out how to get it here in china, and then back to the states when i go home.

I could use a new/better french fry cutter, the one I've got is pretty well worn out. A new bicycle helmet would be nice too.

You make your own french fries from scratch? That sounds like fun!

Hmm... I don't know what I need for Christmas. The 'rents bought me another year of AAA Plus coverage for my birthday, although since I moved I'll have to be in a new AAA club and I'm still hoping that that gets itself correctly straightened out.

It'll be way too soon to ask for HSM3 on DVD. Not that it won't be out yet, just that Disney has a habit of releasing a much better edition of these movies a little bit down the line, so it's a good idea to wait. Plus, if I wait a few years I bet I can get all three in a really cool box set.

I'm set on pots and pans, small kitchen appliances, etc. And I don't want to ask for any large furniture that will prevent me from being able to load practically all of my possessions into my car.

Looks like all I'm asking for is vegan candy and fan merchandise!

    -new pair of dark jeans
    -colorful scarf
    -used bike
    -bike helmey
    -bike lock
    -macromedia flash pro 8
-persepolis (the city and/or the movie)
    -having a BJ with friends
-sushi date with Dr. Cameron from House (yowza!)

  14. Swabie Scabbie 34

    31 October 2008 03:47pm UTC

    -waterproof, laptop friendly timbuk2 bag
-rain fly for my bike (not sure this exists yet)
    -books
    -new guitar strings

I've gone through two bike lights in the last few weeks (one stolen and one broken when I crashed at night as a result of my bike light not being bright enough), so I finally got a little maglite that I rubber-band to my handlebars, and it's by far the best bike light I've ever had.

This is perfect! On August 18, 2006, I wrote a blog entry describing an incident where I was forced to purchase some of that EXACT moustache wax. I have been saving it all this time for a gag gift, but didn't know anyone with facial hair. So I still have it -- right here! I will send it to you!
