My birthday/Christmas list 2009 or An Ode to Materialism
Woo! Two months till Christmas, and you know what that means! Time for my annual list of things that I want.
Update: I've gone through and made some changes warmth and pants sections!
Big Ticket Items
And by that, I mean that these are the sort of things that you shouldn't get without consulting me first. And also that I have no chance of getting one of these for Christmas.
- No motocycle this year. The transportation I want is a new bicycle. Something shiny and light with index shifters and clip-in pedals (forgive me if I am butchering bicycle terminology).
- A server. I'm tired of hosting all my personal projects elsewhere. And paying a ton for it. I'm also tired of having to run my developmental virtual machines on my Mac. My own server would be awesome. Unfortunately, I know nothing about purchasing a server!
Smaller-ish things
Warmth (I love warm clothes! Like nothing else.):
- Patogonia Down Sweater Hoody. This thing is so comfy, so cute and so awesome. But if I had it, I'd have to do more things outside to earn it. That would be a good thing! I'd want continental blue. Update: OMC is selling this without the hood on sale right now! While I am absolutely in love with this jacket, it might be more useful for me to get say a new rain jacket (discussed below). It is just, I really like this jacket.
- Pategonia Lined Flannel Jacket. This one will be tough to find because they don't technically make it anymore. They sold it last year and I thought it was amazing but figured I could ask for it this year. Wrongo! They have some mediums in the Outlet Stores but no smalls. Good luck. But if you do find this, I will be SO EXCITED.
Patagonia Synchilla. Just like my dad used to have. Though, they don't sell the color he had anymore. So, I'd want Chili (aka red)! Update: Keri has convinced me that this isn't cute enough and that it has too much competition in my wardrobe with my beloved sweaters.- Woolrich Alaskan Wool Shirt. This appears to be the style of the red wool shirt that I stole from my mom and wear all the time (e.g. one, two, three, four, five, etc). I want a gray or brown one! And the one I stole from my mom is sort of falling apart. Update: While this is in the same category as the Synchilla above, my current one really is falling apart. This ones stayin' on the list!
Pants (I currently have two pairs of pants):
- Some sort of pants that are outdoorsy, but also look sort of presentable. I don't have dress pants anymore (and don't want to change that!) but these would fill that role. Patagonia has a couple
optionsIlike. I'll try them on soon and get back to you. Update: I didn't like any of the Patagonia pants. - Some sort of corduroys with big thick chords. And I'm thinking brown or tan. Something earthy. But not with too much orange. Update: Cordarounds (see two items below) also makes some corduroys that seem pretty cute. Colors-wise I like Khaki or Chestnut.
- New jeans. Mine are getting pretty worn out. I wear Levi 501s, waist 30, length 30.
- New item: The Cordarounds Bike to Work pants. Oh! Em! Gee! These pants are so cool! They are sort of casual slacks made for biking. How are they good for biking? The pockets and the lining are made from reflective material so if you role up your pants and pull out the pockets you are more reflective. And they look cute! This item should go straight to the top of the pants list! Colors-wise either option (Khaki or Brown) look cute!
As you can see, I sort of have a crush on Patagonia these days.
Shoes (I've got leg problems, maybe this is the answer!):
- Vibram Five Fingers. I know they look really funny but they feel comfy and would make barefoot running safer!
Backpacking:
- A lightweight waterproof jacket. Mine is getting older, is no longer completely waterproof, and is pretty heavy. These ones from MontBell seem pretty nice. I'm sure my father would have some more suggestions.
- A lightweight 2 person tent. I'm thinking the Black Diamond Hilight. 3 pounds!
- A Tivek ground cloth for my new tent! (Kite Tivek, not construction Tivek)
- Mesh stuff sacks. Just like the ones Aunt Laura has made for Greg and me before. And by that I mean, you better talk to Aunt Laura!
- Wool long underwear. Smartwool has an absolutely horrible website and they have 3 different weights of long underwear but don't do a very good job of explaining the difference (Besides, 'this is warmer than that'. But how much warmer?!). Something from there though.
- Synthetic or wool boxer briefs. Cotton is baaaaaaad!
Biking:
- Just like last year, Ortieb bicycle panniers
- A new helmet. I got mine in high school which means it is over 7 years old. And it has been dropped on more than one occasion. More than 20 occasions, probably.
Electronics related:
- Garmin GPS watch. The Forerunner 305 is a great deal, but if you really must splurge, the Forerunner 310XT would be great, too.
- Accessories for my Garmin GPS watch: heart rate monitor and speed/cadence bike monitor.
- An arm for my monitor
- An expansion drive for my Drobo. That means it must be at least 1.5TB in size.
Make sure to sound off in the comments with things you want!

It is always so funny to me when you post your list...I would just like to point out that I have been compiling a birthday/christmas list since September...
Also, a pants suggestion for above:
Sebastian has these pants from REI, they are khaki's (or at least khaki colored) but they aren't cotton, they are that light weight synthetic material that hiking pants are made out of. They are basically hiking/outdoor pants but they look like a nice pair of khaki slacks.

Yeah, Keri! Where is your list?
And Beca, what did you ask for? And did you get any of it?

I haven't made mine yet! I have a rough draft, but it's not quite ready.
