My favorite things: sleepy chatting

This is the start of a new series here on TSP, "My favorite things" wherein I will write about (surprise, surprise!) my favorite things!

In this installment, I'd like to talk about sleepy chatting. Which is definitely one of my favorite things. I'm not sure if "sleepy chatting" is the best name for it, though.

What is sleepy chatting you ask? Well, it is the kind of chatting you do when you are really tired but end up chatting with friends for hours. It has to happen in groups and you have to be tired (to really put you in the right mood). Typically sleepy chatting happens at sleep overs, around campfires or in tents (and in fact I've never done it anywhere else).

It happened this last weekend after the Harry Potter Movie Marathon. We finished watching the last movie around 1:30am and then those of us that were still awake proceeded to chat until 7am. I would have kept on chatting longer to if it weren't for the fact that I was stressed out about work I had to do the next day.

Why does it have to be in groups? I'm not really sure, I think maybe to make it less of a 'conversation' (and something that you could do on the phone or anywhere) and more of a sharing circle. I think this way people talk about things differently, more thoughtfully, and different questions get asked than normal. Also, I think it is rarer to have groups chatting so when it happens it is more of an event and people want to make it last, so they don't want to stop chatting.

Why does it have to be when you are tired? I'm not really sure, but I think when you are tired you are more willing to let your mind wander, so it encourages you to share things you wouldn't normally talk about. Also when you are tired I think you are more willing to listen.

Oh, and if it is at a sleep over or in a tent, you are all lying down so you can't see each other, so I think it feels like you can share more because people won't be judging you as much. A fire has the same affect because everyone is staring at the flames and not at each other.

Anyone know what I'm talking about? Can you think of a better name (because "sleepy chatting" sorta sucks)?

I know exactly what you mean and they are great! Though you're right, it has to be the right situation with the right group. The fact that a nice sleepy group chat doesn't happen all the time makes it that much more fun and special. In fact I haven't had one in a while, sounds nice right about now...
