Prejudices

I find it interesting the ways in which we justify our prejudices. I don't like how sometimes I'll like some music more/less after I learn who it is by. That's just silly. Or how for some movies I'll say, you just have to accept them for what they are, but then for others I say, they are the bane of all things movie. I imagine life with no long term memory would lead to a more enjoyable life (though probably less meaningful and fulfilling).

Of course we have reason and of course we remain objective. But I think the reality is that the vast majority of opinions in life come from the gut and not the brain. Certainly more than we think.

So, my new years resolution (does it still feel like the beginning of the year to anyone else?) is to make an effort to stop stating my opinions as if they were fact.

i wish i could do that! sadly, i'm always right, so my opinions are fact. i have no choice.

no, i'm kidding. i am always right, but i hate it when people (including me) state opinion as fact. it turns discussions into arguments and arguments into fights. i learned this a while back, as i am fairly opinionated, and i realized people didn't like hearing my opinion-facts. so i started saying "i dig, but i feel..." at the beginning of every opinion-fact sentence.

i got into some serious fights with a good friend of mine about music because he stated every opinion as fact. and when i said "that's just your opinion, man," he replied with "no it's not." that's a big problem.

    pointless comment. sorry.

and yes! it does feel like the beginning of the year! except that it's 35+ degrees (c) in my office! horrible!

Yeah, but some things are facts, and people try to make them into just opinions. For example, some books are simply awful. They're just poorly written. And I don't want to tell anyone that they can't like them anyway; I like a lot of things that I know are inferior products. But I hate it when I casually state that something isn't any good and have someone respond with "Well, that's just your opinion." It's like, hey, I didn't say you couldn't like Manos, Hands of Fate, or that you're a bad person for liking it or whatever, I just said it is objectively the worst movie ever made. Geez.

Manos, The Hands of Fate? Isn't that the movie that cures the sick and has the power to abolish war? Or, wait, no. That was TSP.
