Redoing the backyard
So, as I said, I decided to level the backyard this week. I finally finished it this morning! But let me tell you, it was a lot more work than I thought it was going to be. Pretty much, I took all the advice that the nice people at the Portland Nursery gave me. Here is what they told me:
- Take off all the sod
- Till the area
- Put in a layer of compost to enrich the soil
- Put in some fertilizer
- Till again, perpendicular to how I did it in step 2
- Rake the area
- Roll the area
- Rake the area
- Roll the area
- Rake the area
- Dispense the seed
- Put down a top dressing
Step 1 took a lot of work! A different person said I didn't need to do step 12, so I didn't.
Now, make sure you read step 3.
They didn't sell the compost they recommended at the Portland Nursery so I had to go to Mt. Scott Fuel for it. I didn't take Leeland, but I drove my mom's Protege instead, thinking that the bags of compost might be a little dirty. When I got there I noticed that all they had was big mounds of stuff and not bags, and I wasn't going to have them just put the dirt in the trunk, but there was an option to have it delivered. When the trunk showed up with my compost it was a huge dump truck. It had three compartments in the back and I assumed my compost was in the bottom of one of the compartments. So, I had him back into the driveway and told him to drop the load (hehe) and it turns out the entire dump truck was for me. Here is a picture:

I had to shovel all of that into the backyard and disperse it evenly. Suffice to say, I was not a happy camper yesterday. I did not expect that much dirt!
But it is done! I hope the seeds are out there right now taking root!
