The 2008 Election

I'm not a political person. I don't find politics interesting. I find the lack of universal truth (like we can maybe find in mathematics) in the decision making process incredibly frustrating. I hate the fact that you can take two rationale people and come to two completely different conclusions. I don't like making people uncomfortable (especially my friends) by having opposing viewpoints. Basically, politics are not any fun.

But most of all I hate the fact that they are so important.

Not necessarily for me. I kind of get the feeling that the decisions being made in Washington by the big boys don't affect me much. I am a law abiding citizen (mostly because I don't really have the desire to do anything that happens to be against the law). I live in the United States (as opposed to somewhere else that is more affected by our foreign policy). I am not at the extremes of the money scale. I am healthy. I don't have an income (let's hope that changes today!) so I have none/negligible taxes. When I am affected by government it is generally the local ones. From my city/county/state. I get speeding or parking tickets. I think I am in pretty fortunate in this regard. I guess what I mean is that there is no issue that is being debated that I feel will affect me directly. I have opinions on the matter of course, but I honestly do not think that my life will change much because of the upcoming election.

But what happens does affect people. It does affect the world. Philosophically and morally and compassionately they are very important.

What has happened in the United States recently is incredibly bothersome. And by recently I think I mean at least the last half century. I think the United States is being controlled by money. And businessmen. I want a leader that I believe in. I want to be motivated by the president. Because right now, without that, I can't believe in the US as a whole. Right now, this is a place that I live because it is where I am and where my friends and family are. But I want this to be a place where I can say "I'm proud to live here and be apart of this."

I recently watched both Bobby and JFK (and went on a JFK information binge) and maybe it was because they were movies and maybe it was because because they later died, but I was moved by the speeches they gave and the principles on which they stood. That is how I want to feel for my president.

Needless to say there is one candidate that does this for me (this has never happened before). And I really hope that they win the election (and primaries). I'm paying attention now.

*crosses fingers really hard*

A businessman who teaches at DU came into the office today and mentioned the particular person you may have been alluding to in your post. Since he was both a businessman and affiliated with DU, I thought he was very likely to be rooting for the other side, but he went on for about 5 minutes about how amazing a certain individual was and about how certain faculty members at DU who he expected to support other candidates were really excited about this individual.

And if today was any indication, there may be a whole lot of other people excited about this certain someone as well.

there was an episode on the history channel that disproved nearly everything in JFK. just so you know.

and i completely agree. especially with the city/county/state bit. which is why i think it's important that we do two things:
-give more (if not all) power to the states
-eliminate the two party system (well, this is just because i think it's evil)

(Yeah, when I started reading up on the conspiracy I found that there was a lot of misinformation in the movie. I have seen that History Channel episode, too and while they did question most of the movie there are still unanswered questions that it doesn't address. Thus, I don't think we have complete proof of the single bullet theory.)
