Three new wishes

I have decided to make three new wishes. Since I am no longer convinced that those three would make me happy.

So, if I had a genie and three wishes, I'd wish for:

  1. To never have to eat again. Eating is such a chore.
  2. To never have to sleep again. I'd rather do so many other things!
  3. To never have to work again.

Where as I guess my seventh grade self was weighed down with anonymity and rejection, these new wishes seem to imply that I am now weighed down with responsibilities and things I'd rather not do. Though, I don't think you could really describe me current life as stressful. So, what does this bode for the future?

So what if this genie of yours had a mischievous/nefarious streak and granted your wishes, but wickedly so? Like, you would never "have" to eat again, but as a result of not eating, you would turn into a skeleton. And while you wouldn't ever "have" to sleep, you would walk around in a constant zombie-like state. And you'd never "work" again, but instead you'd have to earn your money by begging on the street.

I just know that in my interactions with wily genies, I've learned the hard way that you have to be very specific. You don't want to end up a skeleton zombie beggar!

I agree with Kate. Here is an example of a single wish that gives you the same effect as all three:

    1) I would like to end up a skeleton zombie beggar.

And, that leaves you open to two other wishes, like "I would like to suffocate to death in a literal crush of all of the women in the world," or "I would like to return to the days when the Fool didn't comment on my website."

In short, if you're clever about it, you can maximize the number of bad things that happen to you.

hmm. though i dig the "careful what you wish" type mentality, i feel as though a different approach may better explain. not eating would mean no swedish fish, grape soda, or cupcakes. no sleeping would mean no dreams. and no working would mean being very very happy. thus, i agree with the last. and i think it would be sweet to not have to sleep if you had other things to do, but sleeping can be great.

also. such a negative list. isn't there anything you want, rather than not want?

    I would totally photosynthesize.

Photosynthesis is way outdated, I'd want one of those nuclear battery things that the Terminator has. That way if you somehow find yourself in a cave or northern Alaska you won't die.

The first thing I'd do if I got a genie is hire a lawyer to write my wishes for me, so he can't come up with little loopholes like the ones suggested above.

I'd imagine the not eating one would be set up such that your body operates as though it's getting a well balanced diet, regardless of what you do or do not eat.

I think we all learned from the episode of the X-Files "Je Souhaite" (wow, I haven't had any French in forever, I don't think I spelled that right) that there's no point trying to avoid the loopholes. The genie is probably very old and very cynical and won't even let you try to do good things for other people without messing it up.

All you can do is waste one wish, undo it with the second, and then wish yourself into a genie on the third.

But Aladin gives us hope--remember when he outsmarted the Genie? Or was the genie just really a softie? I always forget, but in either case, we may remain hopeful for the future.
