VICTORY
On the seventeenth of September in the year two thousand and nine (a year and a half ago!), I challenged the members of this website (and mostly omer) to see who would be the first person to achieve 20,000 visits.
Well, just now, my friends, I achieved that goal!
Let's see, at the time of the challenge, I had 11,759 visits and that was 536 days ago. That comes out to be roughly 22 unique visits a day for the last year and a half. Not bad!
But please, let's just take a moment to revel in the fact that I beat Omer, quite handily...
Fresh off my victory, I need to set my next target. Let's see... ahhh, here it is! I'm going to be the first to 100,000 minutes spent on this site! Omer is currently leading the time spent category (well, with the exception of Josie, but there's no catching her, how does she do it?), but it shouldn't be hard to pass him!
Oh, how sweet a victory it is to be the most active person on my own website! Three cheers for me!
Oh, and one more thing!
Last night and this evening I decided that I was really tired with the way TSP looked, so I copied over the old look and then started changing. So, if you come visit TSP tonight, you'll notice that it has a brand new outfit!
I'm not completely happy with it, though there are a lot of elements that I really like. It is a lot more "bold", I'd say. But the point isn't for it to be perfect, I just really wanted to change things up. The last layout dated all the way back from 2007. Almost 3 and a half years ago; without a doubt the longest tenure of any of the layouts TSP has had.
Well, I hope everyone doesn't hate it! (Listen I know change is hard, just take solace in the fact that I am hoping to change it again this summer!)

More change in the summer?? No, Benji, no!

Well, thanks for the support Ariel Swordfish! :)
But I understand, I come here all the time and it takes a little while getting used to. Every time I switch over here it is like, "woah!" But you have to understand, changing TSP makes me happy! Back in the old days I'd practically have a new layout every month. Man, I miss those days!
I'm pretty sure Poppy in particular isn't going to like it. Sorry, Poppy! I know you don't like it when I switch things up!
But look at how much more noticeable the webcam pictures are! And it does this slick thing where it slides down with new images! (though, you'll only see that if I have the web cam on, like I do tonight!) I also really like it that it loads up enough webcam images to fill the entire length of the page.
And man, do I look tired tonight! I need some sleep!
One other thing I did was add time spent to the "This Week" page and make it so the week starts over every sunday (UTC), just in case you followed along over there...

I can't tell you how freeing it is to be able to refresh TSP whenever I want. I don't have to wait 15 minutes anymore to check for comments or look at webcam photos! THIS IS FANTASTIC!

I like the new layout! Very post-modern!

You totally cheated. We all know that I visit TSP 300 times a day in exactly 15 minute increments.

All of us know this.

Well, I think technically then, according to the algorithm, that explains why you don't get any visits! A visit is anything more than 15 minutes after your last action!

But, no I didn't know that!

I hate to rain on your parade, Boatswain, but there are only 96 fifteen minute increments in a day.

Now, if you've been here since 2003-2004 the new yellow box for when you get a message should feel very familiar! Anyone remember that? I also had a layout from 2005-2006 that had a yellow "tab" on the logo when you got a message, so it is sorta like that, too.
And that yellow box for when you have a new message is without a doubt my favorite thing about the new look. Makes me so incredibly happy anytime I get a new message!
If you don't have any new messages, log in, and send me a message and I'll send one back. It really is just the greatest!

Haha, I was all set to be like "Ugh, I hate it when things change, blah blah ramblecakes," but I'm too delighted that you predicted my reaction!
Obviously, I'm not super fond of design changes, but seriously. I've done more than enough meaningless renovation of my own blog over the last 7 years that I should be more tolerant! And I think the new design is nice! I like the webcam being over on the side; I like the shades of blue; I like how clean and modern it all is. I don't love all the white space over on the left side; I would have made the space for the text wider. But overall, I like it!

Poppy, any time a new design gets your approval I just feel warm inside! Woo!
In response to the left side feeling blank, and making the text wider, really the left side white space is equal to the right side (or it is supposed to be). But I see what you mean a little bit. Maybe I'll move the column over.
I won't however be making the column wider. Good idea though! I originally had it wider as apart of this redesign, but there is an optimal column width for reading and this design is already too wide. And when I made it wider I found it harder to read (it's nice when your own observations match up with science!). So, this is the width I think.
But I'm glad you all don't hate it!

My initial reaction to this new layout is hate. But I've only been looking at it for about 30 seconds right now.

Well, I guess I appreciate your honesty Robert! Do you not like the color blue or something?

The guy I share an office with had a bunch of MATLAB plots that were done in black and dark blue and I didn't like them because the blue and black were basically the same color. He switched them to red recently and I think that made them much easier to look at.
So you've sort of gone the opposite direction here. I think there are too many shades of blue and most of the blue looks like it is basically black.
