Walking Boulder

When I was a first-year in College (or maybe it was the summer after my first year when I was technically a sophomore) a survey came out (beats me from where, but I think MSN) that said that Portland, OR was the number 2 city to live in (I don't remember how it was ranked, but I think by happiness or something). As you can see I don't remember the details all that well. But what I do remember was that number 1 was Boulder, CO (Hey! That's my current location!). And I remember being so upset with this Boulder city for having taken away Portland's rightfully deserved top spot. It also didn't help that Omer was from Boulder and liked to rub it in my face.

Well, years later, I now basically live here. I mean my official address is still Portland (they can pry my license plates out of my cold dead hands!) but I will be here until next summer with a few short trips home.

And I got to tell you, I love it here. I love the weather. I love the heat in the summer and the cold in the winter. I love the large blue skies. I love the Flat Irons. I love the myriad biking/walking/running trails all through-out the city.

When I am here I feel like I am in a city that suits me. It just feels right. Basically, sign me up! Give me my house and yard! I'm ready to settle down!

[Now don't get me wrong, there are other places that make me feel this way. Currently the leading contenders are Salt Lake City, Utah (which feels right in most ways but not politically or religiously); The Dalles, Oregon; and Bend, Oregon (seriously, right next door to some of my favorite wilderness ever). But this post isn't about those cities!]

Anyway, I have decided to start a project. I want to have walked or ridden or ran down every stretch of road in Boulder. I got a free map from the visitors office. And I plan on keep track with some pens of which ones I have done so far.

Boulder is just barely small enough to try and attempt a project like this. But it is big enough that it will take me a while. I guess I'm going to have to spend a lot of time here!

I'm a little disappointed a web-oriented person like yourself isn't using an online map for this project!

Well, that did occur to me. Honestly, I am sort of an all or nothing sort of guy. I decided that since I couldn't record where I had walked and upload it all programmatically, I would just wait until I can. (like when I get a GPS at some point!)

I suppose I could put the routes in by hand. But then at that point it isn't saving me any work. (Though, it would be ten times cooler!)

just get an iPhone and do it with any of the million gps apps!

(I really like your idea, by the way)
