While the humans are away the cats will...?

From time to time, the wifey and I have to leave our two little, perfect, adorable, sweet kitties home alone. You know, for trips and weddings and such. And it has always been a mystery as to what our little angels do while we are gone.

Now, we do know this: Whenever we've both been out some where (either for weekend long trips or short 5 minute outings), there is always a cat waiting at the door to greet us. Or if they aren't right at the door, one of them is coming running. So, we always assumed that they heard us fumbling with the keys and just always came to meet us right away.

Well, over the 4th of July we went camping with the in-laws, and in an effort to step up our Cat-Obsession-Level a notch, I had both of our computers set up with their webcams running (and uploading to the net) so we could A) maybe check on them if we had service and B) look at it later to see what happened.

For some reason, both webcams stopped working the morning of the day after we left, so we only have one day's worth of images; but I compiled them into a timelapse video for all to enjoy! The following video is going to be really boring if you don't absolutely love our two cats:

So, a couple things to note:

  • For practically the two weeks leading up to our trip, Josie had barely left the grey chair you can see in the bedroom.
  • Second, Josie never, ever sleeps on the floor by the door.
  • The lights going on and off are from timers we have set.
  • They did play once!
  • At one point you can see Rini get up on the catch-all table by the door and paw at the door handle.
  • Pretty much for the whole first 8 hours or so, there is at least 1 cat within 5 feet of the door.

So, basically, the video is pretty heart breaking. They mostly slept by the door waiting for us the whole time. At least it looks like they are waiting to me. Who knows, maybe in the next two days they stopped laying there, but when we got home, they both were there ready to greet us.

It is going to make it a lot harder to leave our little girls, if we know they are just going to be pinning away for us the whole time!

This is very interesting! What good little kitties! I was surprised to see Josie being more active than Rini. At the beginning the sporadic movement in the corner by the door was puzzling. What do you think was going on?

That would've been crazy to see a person break in!

I love it! And I don't even like your kitties all that much! (Just kidding. I like Josie a lot. Rini and I have reached an understanding, although it is tenuous.)

I loved when Rini reached up for the door handle. Although I did wonder, since she has tried to sneak out, if she was looking for you or trying to escape. Maybe she viewed it as her opportunity to make a break for it?

They both like boxes and new things a lot, so I wonder if the box by the door had anything to do with their behavior. It did look like they were looking toward the door quite a bit, though.

Martha, I'm not sure exactly what you're talking about, but I think the sporadic movements are either caused by them bathing, or looking up whenever they hear sounds in the hallway.

Satchel, we thought about that! At least we would have video evidence to help catch the thief!

Erik, if Rini was trying to escape, it would have been to come and find us (think Homeward Bound). They definitely like boxes! Are you talking about the box by the door under the bikes? If so, that box is always there and wouldn't explain any of their behavior. They were looking at the door waiting for us to come home!

I meant the white box in the middle of the room that they both spent a lot of time laying on, but Josie in particular. It's only huge and takes up a quarter of the room!

It is cute the way the are staying the the same room most of the time. How could they not be sad with that music??

It's only boring when they're lonely and missing their humans! :)
