Why I am not a traveller
I want to see the world, and I want adventures, just read some old posts. The problem is that every time I do go out and see the world I usually get tired of it before my trip is finished. There are a number of reasons for this, I think.
- I am a homebody. I love hanging out at home, operating on my own schedule, eating when I want to, sleeping when I want to. I like my things. My couch, my room, my kitchen, my shower, my lighting. Not because they are better or because I have chosen them (I don't do a lot of choosing in the environment area of things, I usually take whatever is there or the cheapest) but because they are mine. I love familiarity. I have a friend Satchel who likes to really mix up who he hangs out with, if he hangs out with the same person/people too much he needs a break. I am completely the opposite. Once I find something I like I will keep it up until it dies. Which really isn't necessarily a good thing. :)
- The converse of that is I don't like staying in other people's homes because I always feel like I am stepping on people's toes. On the hike we were always staying B&Bs which were people's homes (90% of the time).
- I am a very social person, but I don't really like meeting new people. I find meeting new people to be kind of an exhausting task. Or actually that is a complete lie. I love meeting new people, but I hate having to always be on my best behavior to be exhausting. So meeting new people is fun if it is in small quantities. On a long trip like this all I do is meet new people. I never just get to relax with people I know. (This is more true now that my parents are gone, I can relax with them)
- I don't like being by myself all the time. At home I will go 8-12 hours programming but then I can always leave and spend time with friends. Here, all my friends are back home!
- I like fast reliable internet. I do, I really do.
- I am not good at letting go (see previous two bullets). One of my biggest regrets about Costa Rica was that I didn't really start making friends with the natives till the 5th month. I either hung out with the two other people in town from the States or in an internet cafe chatting with people in the states.
I do like seeing new places and seeing new things, I love it. I just like it in smaller quantities I think. Or as apart of 8th grade schools trips where everyone in the class and my parents go (effectively my whole live). But next Monday I am heading to France and I think being around Mike is going to improve my attitude tremendously!
