Holy shit
Not very often am I floored by websites. Even my most used and favorite websites, Gmail, Facebook, Google Reader, Flickr (which used to be a favorite, but is now about to be phased out) all did not have "holy shit" moments.
Here are some "holy shit" websites from the past:
- Slash7 for the layout.
- Waferbaby for the layout and design. It isn't really much anymore.
- Google Calendar. But it turned out that this still has some things to work on.
I can't think of anymore right now.
Well, I just wandered to Snipshot, an online photo editor. And it is perfect. It is quick and responsive; it doesn't have the usual lag associated with javascript based sites. With the exception of a lack of red eye, it has everything I need. I love it.
In a short while I am going to switch all my photos over to this site (from flickr), and luckily Snipshot has an api so I will be able to incorporate it into my new photos section. I am so excited about this.

As your average internet fan, I simply must wonder how slash7 got its name.

This site looks useful, but move everything from Flickr? Why? It doesn't even look like Snipshot hosts photos, as they give you the option to save to either Flickr or WebShots. And WebShots doesn't look as much fun as Flickr.
Want to know what makes me say "holy shit" on the internets? (Of course you do.) 1,500 cat photos on one page, that's what. Via MetaFilter

"Why? It doesn't even look like Snipshot hosts photos, as they give you the option to save to either Flickr or WebShots."
That's what I was thinking at first, but I think when he says move them to this site, he is referring to this site, like thescruffypirate.org.

Yes, sorry, let me explain a bit more. Back before I got my flickr account I was thinking about developing a section of thescruffypirate.org to put my photos. But when I saw flickr I thought it did everything I wanted it to do, so I bought an account and promptly forgot about the idea.
However recently I have become a little disenfranchised with flickr.
1) I don't like have to pay for it.
2) When I was supposed to renew my subscription last august I missed the deadline by 2 weeks. I was under the impression that if I switched to a free account the only thing that would happen would be that in the future I would not be able to have as many of its features available to me. However, it deleted most of my albums. This irritated me. 3) I don't like not having complete control over my photos. 4) I have begun to be irritated with how it is set up. I can't think of a better way for such a large, multi-user site. I just would like it to be different.
One more thing happened, that finally convinced me to go for this. I am not happy with any photo organizational tool available for the Mac. I hate them all. Either they don't get tagging right (iPhoto) or they do, but aren't free and have other problems (iViewMedio Pro) or just do way to much and still don't get tagging right (Aperture and Lightroom).
So, I am going to make my own photo sharing section of thescruffypirate.org and will use it to organize my photos.
And because I am no longer using pirated software, I don't have anything for editing photos. So Snipshot, will fill that need.
This way, I can be in charge of how the tagging works, and the display and finding works. Everything. I am pretty excited. Though, I have 2 website projects to start and finish before I get to that. So, hopefully, if all goes according to plan I will be able to work on it sometime in 2023. :) (get it? because I never finish anything?)

Ah, that makes sense now. Thanks, Robert and Benjamin. As someone who doesn't write his own software from scratch, it didn't occur to me that Benjamin would be making his own photo sharing section.
Will users have enough storage space for me to put 1,500 cat pictures here? Cuz I know where to find some.

Oh, dear God, Steve the Interloper. This is incredible.
DPB, I am also very excited about this photo feature that is just now a twinkle in your eye, but, seriously, these cats are aMAZing.

i've been torn for years regarding this photo software thing. a few years back, when the dread pirate showed me iView media pro, i was ecstatic and spent hours organizing my photos on that. i still use that for my older photos.
last summer i got a supah-cool SLR camera (nikon d70s) which shoots in raw format (raw format means that it stores all the information the camera sees, rather than converting it to jpeg. you know the way a digital camera can take several different looking pictures depending on what you set focus to? this allows me to decide on my computer. it's wonderful). since it shoots in raw, i need a raw photo editor. since i hate photoshop's raw editor, i've started using lightroom, also made by adobe, since i think adobe does photos right. it is also linked to photoshop, making alternative editing simple.
as benj said, they "still just don't get tagging right." so now i'm really torn. in a few days lightroom will no longer be a beta and will cost money. but all the pictures that i've dedicated tons of time to since the summer are in my lightroom library. and transferring them would mean all my raw settings would be gone. this is terrible. personally, i have to disagree with you, benj, and say kudos to you, steve. i love flickr. there are naturally some flaws (i mean, it is owned by yahoo), but in general, as an online photo viewer, i think it's great.
benj, i'm excited as hell to put my photos on tsp in 2023, since i know you'll get it right. until then, i'll simply wallow in my unorganized photo misery.

I tried taking pictures in raw format, my computer is really old and really struggled with them. I've only got one 2GB card too, which can fill up pretty fast with raw depending on what you are taking pictures of.
Flickr... is kinda meh for me. I'll stop using it once I've got some webhosting again.

I thought I was hallucinating. Not use flickr?! Really?!
But lately I've been feeling the same way--I don't like that I have to get a Yahoo! account to use it. I don't like that I can't mass download my photos (with tags and metadata) to sync up with my laptop archive. And other stuff, too!
Grr. Flickgrr.
