The Speed of Fire
Absolutely incredible video showing how fast fire can move. You always hear that it can move fast, but seeing it in action is another thing. And I don't think this is as bad as it can get, I mean, I think I could have out ran that (though how far do you have to go before you get to a safe place?).

Have I told you that in training they showed a video that clocked a fire moving at 68 MPH!!! If the conditions are bad enough (fire is moving up hill toward you in a canyon on a really windy day) those fires can move at unbelievable speeds with amazing amounts of heat (faster than 68 MPH)!!!
To find a completely safe place you may have to travel over a couple miles. It depends on the location of the fire and the size of the fire. You might be able to get out of its path instead of finding a big enough clearing to keep you safe. And even if you do find a clearing in the case that you can't get out of the way, most natural clearings wouldn't work too well due to grass and other small fuels that cover clearings. So it could be a long way.
I was pretty arrogant going into the training with an attitude of fearlessness of fires. When I thought of a forest fire, I felt like it wouldn't be too hard to get out of the way or run through the fire quickly to the other side, but it's not like that. With so much fuel, the fires get unbelievably hot and fully grown trees become similar to logs in a fireplace. The heat and fumes of the fire could get to you and kill you before the actual flames do. Forest fires are absolutely incredible.
